Mithraeum
Only one possible Roman temple site has so far been identified in Leicester. It is thought that this building was a Mithraeum, dedicated to the Persian god, Mithras.
The worship of Mithras was favoured by Roman soldiers, so temples to him can be found all across the empire. The mythology associated with Mithras can feel very familiar-he was referred to as the “Son of God” and “Saviour” and was born on 25th December.
