Penannular Brooch

Findspot: All Saints Road

A simple penannular brooch, categorized as a type F or H, under Elizabeth Fowler’s system of classifying Roman brooches from the 1960’s. It was found 13 feet down under All Saints Road and donated by notable Leicester collector, Noel Spurway.

This small brooch has flattened, slightly flared terminals with a random grooved decoration on one side made up of a criss-cross pattern and small notches in the side of each terminal.

Brooches like these could be used as clothing fasteners by both men and women. The pin was inserted through the layers of fabric and the ring could be turned to give a more secure fit where the pin could lock into place.
