Upchurch Ware Bowl

This bowl was found when the site for the new Opera House was being excavated in October 1876. The final performance in the Leicester Opera House was on 11th June 1960 and the building has since been occupied by various restaurants and bars.
Upchurch Ware is the name for a type of fine Roman pottery that was made in North Kent. The potters were influenced by the shapes of pottery from Gaul, a region of the Roman Empire which included most of France, Belgium, Luxemburg, Switzerland and even parts of Germany and Northern Italy.
